How To Curate Your Own Sense Of Style
Do you ever look in your wardrobe and find you have nothing to wear? Despite the fact that you're presented with piles of clothes you've been hiding away each time you open the closet door! We've all been there, myself included.
Do you have one off pieces that you love but you've never worn because, what do you wear it with? This may be down to a lack of your own sense of style. Maybe you used to have one but as you've grown, you've also outgrown the style you fostered in the past.
Worry not! This is an exciting time. This is a time to revisit and revamp in order to curate a wardrobe that is aligned with the present you, the you in the here and now. So, how does one revamp their own sense of style?
1. Start with the analysis!
What do you wear most often? Which items do you rewear over and over again? If you're anything like me, your favourite activewear items might spring to mind, and that's ok. But, let's also think beyond that. What would you wear to lunch with a friend? We're starting with casual looks here. Do you have a favourite go-to pair of jeans? A favourite top? Now, think. What do you like about these items? The fit, the colour, the fabric? You don't need to throw these out but what you can do is shop for similar items as this is your comfort zone. This an easy step to take. Shop for staple pieces that you KNOW you will enjoy wearing and feel comfortable in.
2. Let's do some research!
Not as boring as it sounds! Search on Pinterest for outfits that you like and align with your personality. Fashion is a way to express yourself. Think, does this style express who I am, or who I endeavour to be (if you're looking to change your image)? Research doesn't have to be done online. Go for a coffee. Sit in a cafe with a lot of foot traffic, where you can people watch and examine what others are wearing (not as creepy as it sounds). Note down styles that you like and try and find similar online. However, don't take pictures of the passers by - that may be a little creepy!
3. Copy and Paste
Now that you've found some styles you like, head to the shops (or online) and copy those ideas. That's what fashion is. It's taking inspiration from somewhere else and making it your own. Try mixing your new items with some of those staples we discussed in Step 1.
4. The Hard (but fun) Part
Time to get uncomfortable. You have curated a small capsule wardrobe of styles you love. Let's get creative now! Next time you're out shopping, and you see something you like, your first thought might be 'yeah, but that won't suit me.' NONSENSE! Buy it! It could be a dress, a jacket, a bag... whatever it is... buy it! Bring it home and experiment by mix and matching it with items from your new collection. This way, you've achieved a balance. You'll have your 'comfort' items and this new piece should add a breath of fresh air to your new style!
